Protecting the Cells of the Body

Our cells work in a complex fashion. It is not only the structure of the cells that determines their ability to do their job but also how they are constructed and maintained. The cellular mechanisms involved determining what effects on the body these cells will have. One of the many facts about our cells that surprises us is the fact that free radicals can attack our cells and cause damage. There are certain factors that contribute to the formation of free radicals and the increase in their numbers. The first one is exposure to sunlight. Environmental damage done by toxins is another significant factor. It seems obvious that if we are constantly being exposed to chemicals that attack our cells, they will eventually damage them. This is especially true in areas that are heavily industrialized. Chemical pollution is a major environmental problem around the world.

Another environmental problem that contributes to the damage to cells we experience over time is radiation. The sun emits radiation that reaches our body’s cells. This radiation is especially strong over the course of a day. This type of cell damage is called oxidative stress and accounts for a large portion of the changes we notice in our bodies as we age.

If there are too many free radicals in the body then the cells will get damaged faster. In addition to taking antioxidants the way that they are ingested by the body is another way to ensure that the cells continue to work correctly. Vitamins and minerals along with proper cell growth is another important part in ensuring the continued growth of new cells.

Even though cell regeneration may not be working very well it is still very important for the maintenance of health. The body needs cells so it keeps producing new cells. Without new cells the body cannot perform at its optimal level. By providing the body with the right nutrients it can function at its best and prevent cellular damage.
